NEW YORK CITY - The Dallas Cowboys remain hopeful that Tyler Smith and Tyron Smith will play in Sunday's season opener against the New York Giants. … with some positivity coming on Friday as they participated in the teams “mock game“ inside The Star.
But just to avoid misunderstanding: Dallas’ “mock draft” is the staff’s version of a walk-through.
Smith left Monday's practice with a hamstring injury, and Tuesday's MRI diagnosed the offensive tackle with a strain. On Thursday, coach Mike McCarthy told us Smith is progressing in his recovery.
"He says he feels really good. … He’s very optimistic," McCarthy said.
On Friday, though? Team owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan that their availability was “suspect.” And then McCarthy offered a bit of a pessimistic note.
“We're making progress,” he said, adding, “(but) the reality of it is, if they don’t take the necessary reps (on Saturday), then that’ll tell us a lot.”
Tyler Smith only worked with the rehab group during Thursday's practice, But again, McCarthy is saying the 22-year-old former first-rounder could still play this weekend if he practices on Saturday.
