Dallas Cowboys Ex Jaylon Smith Signing? 'Deserves a Look' with Seahawks
FRISCO - Jaylon Smith is, as we like to call 'em around here, "A Friend of the Show.'' The former Dallas Cowboys linebacker forged a relatively successful NFL career given that coming out of Notre Dame, he was widely seen as one of the best prospects in the 2016 NFL Draft until he sustained in his final collegiate game an injury so horrible that some doctors thought he'd never walk properly again.
The Cowboys selected him in the second round, even knowing that he would miss his entire rookie season rehabbing from the injury. Through work and character and, he will tell you, his faith, he made it onto the field and even made a Pro Bowl.
Smith, who still spends a great deal of time in Frisco, has bounced around a bit since then and he's a free agent now. Is he coveted? There is buzz around the Seattle Seahawks that he should be.
Teams are putting the finishing touches on their roster before training camp kicks off at the end of the month, and perhaps the Seahawks could get in on the fun as well. What position the Seahawks should target is up for debate, but to one analyst, the answer is clear.
Seattle Sports' Michael Bumpus, a former Seahawks player, thinks his old team's lack of depth a linebacker is "a real concern." Bobby Wagner is an aging but accomplished star. Vet newcomer Devin Bush is a reclamation project. Jordyn Brooks is not ready, still nursing an ACL injury.
“What I need is a guy to be a depth piece who’s been there who’s done that,” Bumpus said on the Bump and Stacy Podcast. “And there’s a man by the name of Jaylon Smith who is a free agent right now. You don’t need him to come in and be a starter right now ... You need him to bring that veteran presence, you need him to be a solid backup, you need him to contribute on special teams, and he’s (not going to be expensive). ... You’ve got to take a look at Jaylon Smith.”
Bumpus has one part wrong; he's not a core special-teamer, maybe because his condition - he battled back from drop foot - doesn't much allow it. But he was a Giants starter last year, and the "leadership'' part is right. And probably so is the view on finances.
His celebratory style used to rub some Cowboys fans raw ... but Jaylon often explained that, basically, he was simply celebrating life. And now at least one keen Seattle observer thinks he could he give some life to the Seahawks defense.
