Jayron Kearse Signs New Cowboys Contract, Reveals 'Deserved' Goal

The Dallas Cowboys have fully guaranteed safety Jayron Kearse's salary of $4 million for the 2023 season

The Dallas Cowboys have some big contract decisions to make in the near future, but on Wednesday, they took care of a bit smaller business first.

According to multiple reports, the Cowboys have guaranteed safety Jayron Kearse's $4 million salary for the upcoming season. Kearse's roster spot was never in doubt, but this move gives him just a bit of extra security.

“Not really, I wasn’t worried about it,” Kearse said. “I’m out here to play football. I’m out here to go get more, much more deserved. I’m just going to have to go get that.”

Since arriving in Dallas in 2021, Kearse has blossomed into a key part of the Cowboys' secondary. Last season, the former seventh-round pick had 55 solo tackles, five passes defended and one interception, plus another pick in the playoffs. With his large frame for a defensive back at 6-4 and 215 pounds, Kearse offers a unique skillset that meshes well with Dan Quinn's defense.

This move is the latest by the Cowboys in taking good care of their safeties this offseason. In March, Dallas signed Donovan Wilson to a three-year deal just before he was scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency. Then earlier this month, the Cowboys re-signed Malik Hooker to a three-year deal as well.

Unlike his fellow safeties, though, Kearse doesn't have the same long-term security. The Clemson product is entering the final year of his contract, and with the Cowboys' coming being tight on cap space next season, it could be difficult to re-sign him.

That said, when contract negotiations do start up again, Kearse will likely remember this show of goodwill from the Cowboys and that will no doubt influence his decision.
