Cowboys' Jerry Jones on Dak Prescott and Mike McCarthy: 'Thrown Under the Bus'?
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opted to pass on Bill Belichick this offseason in favor of keeping Mike McCarthy as coach, but that hasn't stopped him from publicly commenting on the former New England Patriots coach.
Speaking with reporters at the Senior Bowl this week, Jones said that there was "no doubt" that he could work with Belichick and win together. Even after publicly supporting McCarthy, Jones could not give a definitive "no" when asked about the six-time Super Bowl champion.
Coupled with the fact that McCarthy is seemingly in a lame-duck situation with only one year left on his contract, it's easy to see why speculation is still running rampant even after the Cowboys passed over Belichick.
Jones' comments seemed innocuous enough, but some didn't take it that way. On his Outkick podcast The Five Spot, former Philadelphia Eagles star Donovan McNabb criticized Jones for "not really supporting" both McCarthy and quarterback Dak Prescott.
"As a former quarterback, that’s not full support of having a guy as the face of your franchise and a guy who really takes all of the bullets when it comes to negative conversation about the Dallas Cowboys," McNabb said, per Fox News Digital. "He never showed the full support for Dak Prescott."
Jones has continuously stated his support for McCarthy, but once again, his comments on Belichick are giving off mixed signals.
In other words, in the parlance, it could be argued that Jerry remarked on his coach and his QB in a way that "threw them under the bus.''
Could ‘All-In’ Jerry Hire Belichick as (Gulp!) New Coordinator?
Now that every team has officially hired a head coach for the 2024 season, it seems very likely that Belichick will take a year off before potentially returning in 2025. The Cowboys have been a very popular suitor for him if such a scenario were to play out, and Jones isn't exactly doing anything to dissuade those rumors.
Is that a "backstab'' of McCarthy? Is suggesting that Dallas needs more out of Dak a "betrayal''? That's not Jones' intention. But obviously it is giving off that vibe to some.
