Cowboys Promise to Draft a New QB - But What About Promise to Dak Prescott?

The Dallas Cowboys are promising to pick a QB in this NFL Draft while also promising long-term faith in Dak Prescott. Can both be true?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are promising to use a pick in this year's NFL Draft to select a quarterback.

The Dallas Cowboys are also pledging allegiance to incumbent "face of the franchise'' Dak Prescott, suggesting he might be the Dallas QB "for the next 10 years.''

Can both promise and pledge be true?

Can both promise and pledge be smart?

Jerry Jones on Wednesday at the Senior Bowl said the Cowboys are committed to drafting a quarterback in 2023, adding that he should have committed to drafting one every few years as a matter of policy.

A handful of reflections here ...

*Currently, top quarterback talent like Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud figure as very early picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. And no, the Cowboys aren't talking about some massive trade-up.

*At the same time, we're not talking about "just Ben DiNucci-level,'' either.

*Where is the sweet spot? That can depend on the draft and its depth at the position, so we would say it's too early to know (though Dallas personnel boss Will McClay and his staff could already have a feel.)

*How about using the the team's first pick, at No. 26, on a player who would be Dak's backup ... surely for a time, and in theory, maybe forever? That gets complicated (ask Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy as he lived through the Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love chain in Green Bay).

But it can also be rewarding. As a result of that philosophy in Green Bay, that franchise has remained relevant for 30 years ... largely because of two Hall of Fame QBs.

*Is this a vote of non-confidence in Dak? No. It is about "asset management,'' though. At some point, if the best player on the board is a QB ... Hey, he's also the "most valuable'' player on the board. He's an asset. To play. To trade. Whatever.

*Ironically, former Packers boss Ron Wolf sort of invented this concept, as Green Bay would regularly use a pick, and often, on a prospect ... then develop him ... then flip him for a better pick.

*Additionally, Jimmy Johnson did the same in his first season, in Dallas, with the obvious pick of Troy Aikman with the No. 1 pick - and then the use of a supplemental No. 1 on his old U. of Miami QB Steve Walsh.

Was that messy? Yes. But the Cowboys eventually flipped Walsh in trade, and received a bonanza for it.

So ... Young or Stroud? No. Dak plus "Dak Jr.''? Maybe.
