Cowboys KaVontae Turpin 'A Receiver Now!' - Coach McCarthy

Dallas Cowboys speedster KaVontae Turpin has been largely used as a punt returner and gadget guy since entering the league, but Mike McCarthy now sees a bigger role on offense for him.

Dallas Cowboys speed merchant KaVontae Turpin has again been turning heads in Oxnard as the training camp grind continues.

After a Pro Bowl season last year, Turpin's punt return skills were on show, but many wanted to see his blazing speed being used more in the offense, whether that be on a jet sweep or a screen pass; his talents needed to be utilized ... and he knows it, too.

Well, they might be now, as coach Mike McCarthy might have just hinted at how he plans on using Turpin this season.

“Stating the obvious, he joined us this time last year, so now that he’s had a spring to go through all the installs," McCarthy said. "I look at him now as a receiver that rotates in there, not someone that we just have to put in there for certain things. That’s a credit to what he’s done and Robert Prince (position coach) has done with him.”

With the WR4 battle thought to be between Jalen Tolbert and Simi Fehoko, perhaps Turpin is fast catching up and thrusting his name into contention.

Training camp is now in full flow, and Turpin has been putting his best foot forward, whether that be returning punts or getting work in the passing game, his tape is showing good growth and improvement.

And that is what McCarthy is looking for.

“He’s got a unique skillset, got an incredible stride length, and his quickness speaks for itself," McCarthy said. "He’s done something almost every day that makes the tape, the correction, and highlight tapes that we do. He’s having a good camp.”

Turpin has been flashy thus far and with his want to be used more in McCarthy's system, that comes with learning the entire playbook so he can be a useful addition for quarterback Dak Prescott.

And what has Dak seen from Turpin thus far in Oxnard?

“Very excited for Turp, just the role that he’s going to be able to play just on the offensive end as well,” Prescott said. “He’s picked up everything that’s been thrown at him. Huge leap from his first year to second year.”

So could we see Turpin's blazing speed be used on offense this season? Going by McCarthy and Dak's comments, that seems like a distinct - and exciting - possibility.
