Cowboys Meet Record-Setting Aggies RB Devon Achane: ‘Size Doesn’t Matter!’

“People always say I’m small, but I feel like my size doesn’t mean anything.” - Cowboys NFL Draft prospect Devon Achane.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys had a formal interview with Texas A&M Aggies running back Devon Achane … though it might’ve taken some effort to catch him at the NFL Scouting combine.

Achane posted the fastest 40-time among all running backs on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and the second fastest of the weekend. The speedster kicked things off as the first runner to perform with a 4.34 40 unofficial 40-time on his first run.

Achane sped things up on his second run, posting an unofficial 4.32-time. Both of Achane's runs were the fastest among prospects, with only Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs and East Carolina's Keaton Mitchell reaching sub-4.4 speeds.

Michigan cornerback DJ Turner III finished with the fastest 40-time of the event at 4.26 seconds..

The Cowboys met with Gibbs and met with Texas’ Bijan Robinson’s agent as they work up keep their backfield built - a desire keyed by Monday’s move to place the franchise tag on Tony Pollard.

The Cowboys are also considered a move with veteran star Ezekiel Elliott.

A three-year role player for the Aggies, Achane finished with his first 1,000-yard season during the 2022 campaign and averaged 5.8 yards per run. He also was an effective pass-catcher, recording 36 catches for 196 yards and three scores in 10 games.

Achane was named a first-team All-SEC running back for his efforts this past season, as well as a first-team all-purpose back. Achane averaged 6.4 yards per play for his career and scored 21 rushing touchdowns.

“People always say I’m small, but I’ve been dealing with that my whole life,” Achane (5-9, 185) said. “I feel like my size doesn’t mean anything. I’ve been good in my career this far. I do break a lot of tackles. … I feel like I have a natural ability to avoid tackles, and that’s something I’m very, very good at.”

Among NFL scouts, Achane is expected to hear his name called somewhere on Day 2, likely near the end of the second round or the start of the third. His 40-time might solidify his top-50 grade among teams when on the clock.
