Cowboys Micah Parsons: Bigger Equals Better?

Dallas Cowboys pass-rushing linebacker Micah Parsons has added some bulk to his frame this offseason, but will that help his on-field production?

Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons has made no secret of his want to improve his game this offseason. It started out with Parsons wanting to add bulk to his frame.

We don't mean another 10-15 pounds, but a little more muscle to cope with the physical demands of playing as a pass rusher. Micah played at around 245-250 pounds last year and wants that number to be around 255 pounds now.

But when players add bulk, sometimes their speed and quickness can be lost, and in Micah's case, his speed and quickness make him the star he is. Micah himself recently said the added weight is "about stability. Strengthening joints, strengthening the knees, shoulders, so all the nagging injuries don't come across. ... I'm trying to stay as healthy as possible."

So does adding bulk mean Parsons will be a better "all-round" defensive player? NFL analyst Brian Baldinger thinks so.

“I think bigger, stronger is just better,” Baldinger said on NFL Total Access. “I don’t think he’ll lose any of his speed or quickness that has separated him from almost every single player in this league. When I look at what he could add because it’s simple physics, force equals mass times acceleration. More mass, more power, more force. On his third step this year, if he’s going against [Jordan] Mailata, Trent Williams, you want a little bit more power to get to the quarterback.

“You want power, but you don’t want to lose the quickness. You want that power and then the ability to play 20 games.”

Parsons has played 17 and then 19 games, including playoffs in the last two seasons which means the former Penn State star has played a lot of snaps.

We saw Micah's production dip last season as he only managed 2.5 sacks in his last eight games (including playoffs) after grabbing 12 sacks in the previous 11 games.

Part of that was simply due to the physical wear and tear of playing predominantly as a pass rusher for the first time in his short NFL career. But now, Micah is making moves to counter that physical toll that he will no doubt experience again next season.

Does bigger and stronger mean better? For Micah Parsons, that's the goal.
