Cowboys Mike McCarthy Play-Calling: 'Like Riding a Bike!'

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was back in the play-calling chair against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and despite not doing it for over four years, he felt right at home.

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was finally back in the play-calling chair in the 28-23 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday at AT&T Stadium.

In a game where several Cowboys showed flashes of their talents (Jalen Tolbert, Deuce Vaughn, John Stephens Jr., Damone Clark, and DeMarvion Overshown), some might have forgotten that "Big Mike" was back doing what he does best ... calling plays.

So how did it feel to be back as an offensive play-caller after such a long absence?

"I would say a lot of it is like riding a bike,” McCarthy said. “It’s natural, and I think just like anything in this game, your preparation ties to your performance. It was fun to prepare for a game again."

There was a lot of good and a lot of not-so-good, but that's what preseason football is about. For the players, it was a chance to get their first taste of proper live NFL action, but it was also McCarthy's chance to get into the groove as well.

In his first game as the play-caller, McCarthy admitted that there are still plenty of things to work on.

"It wasn’t clean; I got a number of things we’ll talk about as a staff, and we’ll be better for it," McCarthy said. "Preseason games are a bit different, you’re so focused on your players, your guys, and keeping them in friendly concepts, especially with the focus on our young guys.”

Having kept Kellen Moore on play-calling duties since his arrival, McCarthy is now the one with both hands on the wheel as Moore departed to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Our own Mike Fisher has often said that "McCarthy has been the best play-caller in the building'' ever since his announcement as head coach. And now the coach who did both jobs for so many years in Green Bay is back in his wheelhouse. And he had a simple response to how he felt after his first game back in the play-calling chair.

“It was good to get back into it,” McCarthy said.
