Why Cowboys Mike McCarthy Play-Calling Storyline is 'Overblown'

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is now the offensive play-caller, but many doubt the move and have even used it as a reason the franchise can't win the Super Bowl.

Storylines dominate the NFL offseason, and one of the most talked about has been Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy becoming the new offensive play-caller.

Taking over from Kellen Moore, who had Dallas as one of the most explosive offenses in the league, McCarthy has his work cut out to replicate Moore's production, and as such, some doubt the move and have used it as a reason why the Cowboys can't win the Super Bowl.

But they seem to forget McCarthy did win a Super Bowl as an offensive play-caller with the Green Bay Packers, so he has the track record to warrant benefit of the doubt.

Indeed, NFL.com has labeled the current narrative around McCarthy now being the offensive play-caller as one of five overblown storylines this offseason.

"It's hard to find an offseason, any offseason really, where the Cowboys are not tied to a major storyline," NFL.com writes. "This year is no different, as Mike McCarthy taking over play calling has become one of the big narratives to dissect.

"It’s completely fair to have a dash of suspicion at the rebranded "Texas Coast" offense. But if Dak and CeeDee Lamb continue thriving, Tony Pollard continues his ascension and, most importantly, the Cowboys win more games, all the offseason bluster will be rendered pretty moot."

Now let's advance the ball here. Why is McCarthy’s new role an overblown storyline?

While in Green Bay, McCarthy called the plays for most of his time and had good results. From 2006 to 2018 (McCarthy gave up play-calling duties in 2015 before getting it back), the Packers had a seriously productive offense.

McCarthy's first season as play-caller was a teething process (18.8 points per and ranked 18th in the NFL), but he got the offense flowing after that.

In seven seasons, McCarthy had the Packers in the top five for scoring (first in 2011 and 2014), and in eight seasons, Green Bay's offense with McCarthy calling the plays didn't average under 26 points per game.

He also had seven double-digit winning seasons, led the Packers to the postseason in seven straight years and won a Super Bowl.

That is a fine body of work, and there is nothing to suggest that "Big Mike" can't replicate that in Dallas.

Now, we recognize the back-to-back losing seasons in 2017 and 2018, but for the most part, McCarthy was as good a play-caller as there was in the NFL.

Some are doubting the Cowboys' chances due to McCarthy's offense with Dak Prescott at the helm, but the Dallas head coach has "skins on the wall" as a play-caller and we say deserves time before being called out. ... meaning that calling him out now makes it all "overblown.''
