What's Mike McCarthy's 'Sweet Spot'? Cowboys Foes About to Learn
One of the biggest changes for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason has been head coach Mike McCarthy taking over the play-calling duties. With Kellen Moore now with the Los Angeles Chargers, McCarthy gets to steer the ship for the first time since coming to Dallas. But "changes'' don't mean "challenges''; we think it's quite the contrary.
There have been several detractors to the move of McCarthy calling plays, yet some forget he did it to a high standard while in Green Bay ... which yielded a Super Bowl win.
Former NFL player-now-analyst Bucky Brooks isn't one of those detractors. He instead sees it our way and thinks that the Cowboys' offense is going to be a better version than McCarthy/Moore's high-octane one from last season.
“This is a much better team, and part of the reason they’re better is because Mike McCarthy has more control,” Brooks said on NFL Total Access. “He’s now back in his wheelhouse, back in his sweet spot.''
When McCarthy was announced as the Cowboys' head coach after Jason Garrett was let go, many assumed that he would take on the play-calling responsibilities. Our Mike Fisher said at the time that he should do so because "The minute he walked into The Star, he became the best play-caller in the building.''
He didn't take over, however, and Moore continued in that role, to great success, mind you, having Dallas average no less than 24 points per game during his time as coordinator and having the offense in the top five for scoring in back-to-back seasons.
However, for some, Moore's biggest knock was the situational side of the play-calling. But now, with the experienced McCarthy in charge, Brooks is extremely bullish on what Dallas can do next season.
“He gave up those duties to allow Kellen Moore to run this offense, now you have an experienced head coach who knows how to manage the game," Brooks said. "He understands how to look at the game and see the defense has control, maybe I dial it back on offense. Because of that experience and expertise, I think the Cowboys are better positioned to not only have a better regular-season record but to make a deeper postseason run.”
An experienced play-caller who has seen it all before? It might bode well for the Cowboys next season as they look to break that 30-year NFC Championship drought.
