Cowboys Not Planning Ring of Honor Move on Jimmy Johnson; Jerry Jones ‘F***ing Up’ Again?
FRISCO - The wait for Jimmy Johnson to be inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor appears to be once again ongoing, opening up decision-making Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to criticism that he is once again - to use Jerry’s own words - “f***ing it up.”
Jones told us on Monday here inside The Star that he does not presently plan to add a Cowboys legend to the Ring this season. He did mention the candidacy of DeMarcus Ware, who is going into the Hall of Fame this summer. He also mentioned that any move is something he would think about during the coming season.
He did not mention the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Johnson … despite having promised three years ago that the legendary head coach would be enshrined in the Ring.
Since then, there has been the familiar sniping between the two Hall of Famers and co-architects of the dynastic 1990’s Cowboys, with Jerry at one point suggesting that the old coach was “sniveling” about his so-far omission.
Johnson last spoke on the subject in November of 2022 while promoting his book, 'Swagger,' telling “Shan and RJ” on 105.3 The Fan, “I’d be honored. The Dallas Cowboys are a big part of my life, so I take great pride in that. Jerry has told me a half dozen times he’s gonna do it, but I have no control over that. That’s up to Jerry.”
Johnson was asked if he had insight into Jones’ reluctance to make the move and replied with a laugh, “No, not really. It's like my relationship with Jerry. It's a day-to-day thing.”
Jones’ and Johnson’s clash of egos led to a breakup following the 1993 team’s title win. Jones has spoken about his share of the blame for that.
“My role here … it was my job to keep it together,” Jones has said. “I've never been able to know why I f***ed it up."
