Cowboys Eye OBJ Signing as DeAndre Hopkins Trade Talks 'Ramp Up'

Jerry Jones' "New York Minute''? Arizona's DeAndre Hopkins continues to be the subject of trade gossip. Does he fit the "New York minute'' Cowboys concept as well as OBJ?

FRISCO - Jerry Jones' thoughts on his Dallas Cowboys making a big move on a high-profile wide receiver? By the time we sift through them, his thoughts are conflicting.

On the one hand, the Cowboys owner said, “Two-thirds of the money goes to the top 10 or 11 players on every team. So, you’ve got to have young, talented players.''

Young, talented ... and cheap.

But in the next breath while speaking "on the bus'' to the DFW media assembled in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, Jones hinted at another direction.

“Don’t dismiss us doing something special with the right veteran free agent,” he said. “Any place. I would in a New York minute if I think that it fits a lot of what I’m sitting here talking about, if it fits more than a short-term situation for us.”

Free agent? Trade? Assuming that both avenues are intended to be considered here ...

Jones talked openly about his continuing interest in Odell Beckham Jr. The Cowboys planned on signing him in December as a playoff helper, but OBJ wasn't healthy enough as he was still recovering from his torn ACL.

In an oh-so-Cowboys revelation, Jones said, "He’s somebody that I have the same kind of interest that I had in him during the season'' while adding that he (Jerry) has been in contact with Beckham's mother.

OK.

Meanwhile, another "sexy'' receiver name is that of Arizona's DeAndre Hopkins. Does he fit the "New York minute'' concept as well as OBJ?

In Beckham's case, it's simply a matter of negotiating a contract (while getting a green light on his health). In Hopkins' case, it's not only about paying the player but also about gauging the Cardinals' wish for trade compensation.

Both receivers - and a handful of others (Brandin Cooks?) - fit COO Stephen Jones' pledge to add "play-maker juice'' to the Dak Prescott-led offense. But along with Jerry's grab bag of hints comes a pinch of cynicism from Cowboys Nation, with hopes that ideas morph into action.
