Cowboys 'Outrageous' Move Idea: Bucs' Chris Godwin Trade to Dallas?
Looking to expand their big-play receiving game beyond CeeDee Lamb, the Dallas Cowboys are turning their attention to Odell Beckham Jr. and his Friday workout.
Want something different? Silly? "Outrageous''? How about Chris Godwin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
A list of "outrageous" moves suggested for the upcoming NFL new year by USA Today ... one that features fantastical scenarios such as Aaron Donald being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Tennessee Titans obtaining the top overall pick, and the Philadelphia Eagles taking rusher Bijan Robinson in the top 10 ... suggests that Dallas turn to Tampa for aerial assistance, namely in the form of Chris Godwin.
Set to enter his seventh NFL season, Godwin was one of Tom Brady's favorite targets during their shared time in Tampa, a tenure that produced a Super Bowl title in 2020-21.
Godwin earned a career-best 104 receptions last season, tallying 1,023 yards ... almost double what Dallas' second-leading receiver, Dalton Schultz, put up in the latter category. Financial maneuvering might be necessary to accommodate Godwin's cap hit of over $23.7 million (Dallas is currently over $16 million over) but there's no doubt he'd complement and coordinate well with Lamb, who responded to all challenges asked of him when he became the Cowboys' undisputed No. 1 option.
"The Cowboys have plenty of ways to free up cap space, and adding Godwin to the Dallas offense could be just what the doctor ordered," list curator Cory Woodroof writes. "A second or third-round pick is more than worth the veteran experience the Cowboys offense would get with Godwin’s presence, and it’d sure make quarterback Dak Prescott’s life in the pocket a lot easier."
How to separate fact from fiction here? One simple way: We have no idea (nor does the author) if a "second- or third-round pick'' is what the Bucs (or Cowboys) think this player is "worth.''
The Cowboys continue to believe that their Super Bowl window is wide open but they'll have to prove that over the coming offseason by belatedly replacing the offensive firepower that was never replaced when Amari Cooper was traded to Cleveland.
Lamb's emergence was enough to put the Cowboys on a 12-win place and earn a playoff win over Godwin's Buccaneers but they failed to advance past the Divisional round for the 27th consecutive season. Michael Gallup continued to deal with injuries while rookie Jalen Tolbert failed to find a role in the receivers' rotation. The tight end Schultz and Noah Brown, the top receivers behind Lamb, are both set to hit the free agency market.
Dallas' offensive process got off to an unofficial start this week, as it announced the retaining of breakout running back Tony Pollard on a franchise tag. Meanwhile, the receiver search continues, with names like DeAndre Hopkins being tossed around, and with OBJ ready to show his wares ... and now with an "outrageous'' idea to play with.
