What's 'Inside Brandon Aubrey's Brain'? Dallas Cowboys Rookie Secret to Success

The Dallas Cowboys have been picked apart over the first three weeks of the season, and what most thought would be their biggest problem has turned out to be anything but. ... with kicker Brandon Aubrey a big success.

Entering the season, one of the biggest issues many had for the Dallas Cowboys was the kicker situation. With former MLS and USFL standout Brandon Aubrey winning the job in training camp, many still have reservations over how he would cope in an NFL setting. Well, three weeks in, Aubrey has been money.

Aside from the hiccup in Week 1 vs. the New York Giants, Aubrey and his dynamite right leg have made every extra point since (seven) and every field goal (10) as he added another three against the Arizona Cardinals in a 28-16 loss.

And there seems to be a mentality to the success, as revealed by special-teams coordinator "Bones'' Fassell.

“The 49-yarder I was really excited about because that’s one of those ranges where you gotta make this kick, but it's a long kick,” Fassel said. “The couple of short field goals we’ve had, in his brain, he treats is like a 49-yard kick. So he’s treating them all the same, which I think is really healthy for a kicker.”

After Cowboys Nation was scarred by Brett Maher's horror show in last year's playoffs, naturally, many were skeptical over what Aubrey could do, and in the driving rain at MetLife Stadium in Week 1 as Aubrey missed his first extra point, those memories of Maher's struggles came around again.

But Aubrey gathered himself and converted every kick since, along with his field-goal attempts, which included a 55-yard bomb against the New York Jets.

“His confidence, honestly, will be the same as it's been the whole time," Fassel said. "I haven’t seen him waver at all with confidence or anything. Just a very consistent guy, and I think that’s going to bode well for us over the course of the season.”
