The Cowboys news of the day here is the idea of taking the signing of a name kicker seriously - no “haha’s” allowed.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys special-teams coordinator “Bones” Fassel has an entertaining habit of “holding court” with the media, and this weekend he is talking both entertainingly and openly about the team’s need for a kicker.

On the entertaining front, Fassel said that in addition to rostered kicker Tristan Vizcaino, "I think anybody else on Earth who's not on the team right now is under consideration.”

Haha. Funny stuff. But then. Per a tweet from The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Fassel took the conversation a step beyond.

Wrote Machota: “John Fassel says the Cowboys are still evaluating kickers from free agent veterans, the XFL, USFL, etc. He mentioned NFL vets like Robbie Gould, Mason Crosby and Ryan Succop.”

No “haha” there. … And now we are discussing - and the Cowboys themselves clearly are discussing - taking very seriously finding a replacement for last year’s roller-coaster kicker Brett Maher.

Maher, by the way, it’s not presently under contract, and he could find himself back in competition at The Star. But what separates him from some of these other names? He is a veteran-minimum-salary sort of guy.

The three names above? They are $4 million a year kickers - four times what Maher and Vizcaino make.

We recently asked COO Stephen Jones about Maher and he said something about “going back to the drawing board,” not an endorsement. We also know there are those in the building who like Vizcaino. But the Cowboys news of the day here is the idea of taking the signing of a name kicker seriously - no “haha’s” allowed.
