Cowboys Reveal 'Perfect World' NFL Draft Plan: Skill-Position 'Beef,' Hints Stephen Jones

Will the Cowboys pick a star tight end who can produce from Week 1? Or a star running back who can do the same? Going by Stephen Jones' comments, these are distinct possibilities ... "in a perfect world.''

PHOENIX - The Dallas Cowboys tight ends room and running backs room are both going through some changes.

And based on our conversations with Dallas Cowboys execs here in Phoenix at the NFL owners meetings, more changes may be coming from up high in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Said COO Stephen Jones on the tight end spot: "We lost Dalton (Schultz to Houston via free agency). We're probably always going to look to beef that up.''

Said Jones on the running back spot: "In a perfect world, you find a big, physical back who can complement Tony (Pollard).''

There is a thought that youngsters Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson might be enough to take over at tight end. But Jones hinted that coach Mike McCarthy is salivating at the idea of an addition there. And it so happens that this draft is loaded there. Dalton Kincaid, Michael Meyers, Sam LaPorta, and Darnell Washington headline the class, with some expected to be taken in the first round.

And at running back? Pollard is in place, and veteran Ronald Jones has been added to a room that also includes young Malik Davis. But there is marquee talent in this draft at this position, too, a group topped by Bijan Robinson of Texas but also featuring Jahmyr Gibbs, Zach Charbonnet, Devon Achane, DeWayne McBride, Tyjae Spears, Chris Rodriguez Jr. and more.

Is this where Dallas will go with pick No. 26, either tight end or running back? Given how well the front office has played free agency, the Cowboys are uniquely positioned to draft the best available player
