'I'm Brick-by-Brick!' Scouting Report: Cowboys Rookie Jalen Brooks at Camp

Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Jalen Brooks has made a hot start to training camp, but he isn't getting carried away with his performances thus far.

Making a good first impression for rookies is pivotal, and for Dallas Cowboys receiver Jalen Brooks, he is off to a good start. The seventh-round pick out of South Carolina has been showing out in Oxnard.

Back-to-back days have seen Brooks make play after play which includes a pair of touchdowns on Tuesday in red-zone drills to add to his deep touchdown the day prior.

But while his flashes have everyone taking note, Brooks is keeping it simple as he knows his fight for a roster spot is far from a certainty.

"I'm big on brick-by-brick, I want to keep on stacking each and every day," Brooks said. "I like to stay level-headed. I made those plays but I gotta keep on making them to stay consistent."

Consistency is key for any player, and for Brooks, stacking good days is all he can do as he fights for a spot on the Cowboys' 53-man roster.

But with that comes pressure to perform day in, day out, and that can create its own problems on the practice field.

However, Brooks isn't bothered by what's in front of him, instead, just focusing on the simple things.

"I'm very level-headed," Brooks said. "I don't get too high, I don't get too low. That's something I've learned going through a whole lot of adversity. I'm not nervous, I'm not excited, I'm just where my feet are right now."

His feet are firmly on the ground, and after back-to-back days of good showings in Oxnard, Brooks is making the most of his opportunities, and while there is a long way to go, he is putting together a body of work that is forcing the Cowboys coaching staff to take notice of his talents.

Head coach Mike McCarthy stated before Tuesday's practice that he has been "impressed" with Brooks, and after his two touchdowns, maybe McCarthy might have a little more in store for the 6-2, 202 receiver going forward. There is a wall to climb, with CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup locked up at the top of the depth chart, and then competition from there. But climbing that wall? So far, Brooks has the bricks.
