Cowboys Rumor: Planning Trade on Offensive Line?
SAN ANTONIO - I preface this notes package by admitting to know nothing when it comes to preseason football. … relatively speaking.
Why? Everything can change and everything could be a ruse. .. especially, at this moment, as it relates to the offensive line. No wonder my five Dallas Cowboys talking points include the rumor of Dallas trading for help there …
DOWDLE IS RB2; WHAT ABOUT DEUCE? I've already gone on record in this space declaring how much I don't like tiny football players.
It comes off to me as a novelty act and of course fans love them because it makes them seem human. It's hard to relate to people the size of ancient Greek statues.
But after two weeks of "meaningless" preseason football it's hard not to get excited for Deuce Vaughn.
Rico Dowdle looks like the thunder to Tony Pollard's lightning but coach Mike McCarthy and the Dak Prescott-led offense are also being forced to find a role for Deuce.
If the “Texas Coast Offense” guys don't find a way to get the little dude involved in some natural role they aren't properly doing their jobs.
JALEN TOLBERT HAS LEARNED NFL FOOTBALL - He came in with a ton of talent and a threat to other wide receivers after he was drafted but it became evident early on that Tolbert - a natural baseball player - had no grasp of how to play in the Cowboys' system.
That has changed. He's still just the fourth option at this point, but his brain has clearly caught up to his obvious skill.
STOP THE MAZI HATE - First round pick Mazi Smith has struggled. So, what? I still believe in what the Cowboys saw in him and he deserves all the time they will give him.
Whether Mazi becomes the run-clogger they need has nothing to do with him being a Michigan man, by the way. Same goes for Luke Schoonmaker. Tell Tom Brady that Wolverine players don't pan out.
The dumbest football opinions are usually at an apex in August.
OVERSHOWN OUT; COX BACK IN? - With Demarvion Overshown out for the year with an ACL injury (but in "good spirits,'' which is nice), my guy Jabril Cox may have another shot in the rotation.
I've liked him since Day 1 but the time for Cox to make me - and Dallas - look good is now.
THIS CLUB HAS NO DEPTH AT OFFENSIVE LINE - That's it. That's the talking point.
Seriously, we can go into more depth about how Asam Richards is a good project … and how it’s cool that Matt Waletzko’s shoulder will be fine … and that Matt Farniok and T.J. Bass and Brent Hoffman are try-hard guys.
But if this team loses a Zack Martin or a Tyron Smith? Might be reason to start exploring for a vet backup option now, rather than waiting until after football disaster strikes.
