Cowboys DE Sam Williams Reveals Sack Goal: 'I Need 10!'
Dallas Cowboys second-year defensive end Sam Williams is coming off a productive rookie season that saw him show flashes of his talent.
Williams finished last season playing 15 games, totaling four sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits. But despite announcing himself to Cowboy Nation in a devastating way, headlined by his display vs. the Detroit Lions, the former second-round pick wants more next season.
"I need 10 sacks," Williams said via the Dallas Cowboys' official website. "Ten sacks will open up a lot of opportunities for me. Obviously, the team goal is to win a championship, but my personal goal and what I'm working towards is getting better with my hands, and I need 10 sacks."
The last thing opposing defenses want is a Cowboys defense that gets more sacks. Coming off a 54-sack season last year, Williams wants to do his part again for the Dallas defense. But in terms of getting his chances, it won't be easy.
With the likes of Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dante Fowler, and Dorance Armstrong ahead of him on the depth chart as training camp edges closer, Williams will need to build on his efforts thus far in OTA's.
And he has the mindset to do it.
"Every day is a new opportunity for me," Williams said. "Knock on wood, but if a man goes down, I'm next up. If I outplay somebody, then maybe I'm starting. Every day is an opportunity to show that I deserve to be on the field. I need and want to be on the field."
That mindset filters throughout The Star as the Dallas roster - ready to roll at minicamp this week - seems loaded on both sides of the ball.
With so much talent, there is a natural fight for spots, bringing the best out of each player. If Williams hits his sack goal next season, head coach Mike McCarthy will be proven right after he stated that Williams could easily have the second-year leap many talk about.
But 10 sacks? That would be quite the leap - and Williams intends to get there one way or another.
