Cowboys In Round 2: 3 TEs - Mayer, Musgrave & LaPorta - Among NFL Draft Targets?

For comps? Mayer is "Gronk/Witten.'' Musgrave can maybe do some "Kelce things.'' And LaPorta - praised for his YAC ability - draws the "Kittle-like'' mentions. And all three tight ends are available as the Cowboys prepare for the NFL Draft's second round.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys entered this year's NFL Draft believing that the tight end group is one of the deepest ones ever. And now they get to enter Round 2 on Friday believing the same thing.

On Draft Night at The Star, the Cowboys watched as Buffalo traded up ahead of Dallas - just in case! - and took Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid, who lasted all the way to 25 in a surprise. But then more surprises, as the Cowboys passed on taking a tight end of their own, like Notre Dame's Michael Mayer, to instead grab Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith.

And now the first round is over. ... and a run on those tight ends has yet to begin.

We believe that there was a war room debate while on the clock here inside The Star about "Mayer vs. Mazi.'' (The Cowboys would like you to know that they were also mulling over a trade offer, and that that's the real reason they ate up so much clock.) But now we also know that Mayer, along with Oregon State's Luke Musgrave and Iowa's Sam LaPorta, are all sitting there waiting to be plucked on Day 2.

For comps? Mayer is "Gronk/Witten.'' Musgrave can maybe do some "Kelce things.'' And LaPorta - praised for his YAC ability - draws the "Kittle-like'' mentions.

Also still available is the freakishly athletic Georgia's Darnell Washington, all together suggesting that if coach Mike McCarthy wants a star-caliber tight end in this draft (and pssst - he does!) that it can happen with pick No. 58 in Friday's second round.

The Cowboys have gotten to know most of these guys as they search for, as a source tells CowboysSI.com, "their version of Travis Kelce.'' So why not Musgrave? Or Mayer - the all-time leader for receptions by a tight end in Notre Dame history as he hauled in 180 catches for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns in 36 games for the Fighting Irish? Or LaPorta, a guy creating local buzz in Frisco?
