Cowboys Source Answers on Dalvin Cook Trade Rumor from Minnesota
FRISCO - Once upon a time, every team in the league had in its scouting offices at team headquarters a magnetic board. And on that board was every player in the NFL, ranked in a way, with a special emphasis on players who are actually available.
Nowaways, that "board'' is more commonly accessed by the push of a computer button. But the concept is the same. And the concept, according to a Minnesota reporter, is now in part about the Dallas Cowboys "kicking around'' the idea of adding Dalvin Cook.
"Dallas (is) another team,'' Darren Wolfson said Tuesday on The Mackey & Judd Show, "that has internally kicked around the option of adding Dalvin.''
It's an exciting thought. The Cowboys already employ Pro Bowl running back Tony Pollard (on his $10 million tag contract) but what if the Vikings cut the pricy Cook - as seems to be their plan - and Dalvin opts to take a cheap deal to play for Dallas?
And of course, this is where the rumor largely falls apart. Is the name of the four-time Pro Bowl running back Cook on the Cowboys' "magnetic board/computer file'' here inside The Star? No doubt. And his name has therefore been "kicked around,'' as it should be ... along with all the other names of all the other players who might be available.
Indeed, CowboysSI.com has already noted the "kicked-around'' status in one sense with our exclusive story on May 17 via a source stating that Dallas has "no interest'' in trading for Cook. Conclusion to be drawn by that alone? Yes. Dallas has "kicked around'' the concept. And in that scenario, rejected it.
And we can tell you that as this rumor resurfaces, an NFL source again tells us that Dallas is not actively pursuing a trade for Cook.
Are the Cowboys going to bust up their mapped-out salary-cap plan for a running back to share snaps with Pollard? We can tell you that as of the start of minicamp here inside The Star, the preference is to evaluate what the Cowboys have on their roster presently in terms of Pollard backups - none of them on Cook's level, to be sure - before truly "kicking around'' a plan-changing decision.
Minnesota is seemingly going to say goodbye to a fine player. The "devaluation of the running back position'' might mean the league will not treat Cook like the $10 million APY player he's been. And if he sits on the shelf - while at the same time not hooking up with the Bills or the Dolphins, the two teams he reportedly prefers? Maybe then we move beyond the literally by-rote process of "kicking around'' every single name on that ol' magnetic board.
