Cowboys Ex Taco Charlton Smartly Rushes to Defense of Michigan Rookie Mazi Smith

"Me and my situation in Dallas is totally different than what Mazi Smith is walking to, so stop comparing us," Cowboys ex Taco Charlton says. "I’m sure he’ll be a great player for the Boyz give him time."

FRISCO - Most people who know Taco Charlton on a personal or even professional level are likely not shocked at his highly selfless and self-aware tweet during NFL Draft Weekend as he's reacting to a fellow Michigan defensive lineman, Mazi Smith, having been selected with the 26th overall pick by his old Dallas Cowboys team.

Maybe naturally, silly as it is in football terms as they don't at all play the same position - some fans opted to compare Mazi to Taco. It's a nonsensical take ... but to Charlton, it's something more.

No, Taco doesn't think it's cruel and unfair to Taco. Taco thinks it's cruel and unfair to Mazi.

"Me and my situation in Dallas is totally different than what Mazi is walking to, so stop comparing us," Charlton tweeted. "I’m sure he’ll be a great player for the Boyz give him time."

Charlton who was drafted in the first round by the Cowboys in 2017 and never quite lived up to the high expectations that came with all of that, could be offended that his name is being dragged in the mud this way. But instead, his tweet is meant to reach out in defense of Smith, 21, who among other things is a run-stopping 1-tech defensive tackle ... as opposed to what Charlton does as a defensive end.

Charlton, who has bounced around the NFL, having played for seven teams in six years, would likely be the first to concede that his experience in pro football hasn't quite reached the heights he might have expected. But to his credit, he is accurately and kindly trying to help the media and the fan base understand that his journey has nothing to do with the path that Mazi Smith is about to walk ... except for the fact that both of them once played some football in Ann Arbor.
