Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb Moving to New Level? How Brandin Cooks Will Help
The Dallas Cowboys got CeeDee Lamb the help he needed in the form of Brandin Cooks. After the Cowboys' offense was one-dimensional at times last season, with Lamb the only outlet, another receiver of note had to be brought in.
While there were flirtations with Odell Beckham Jr. and rumors of DeAndre Hopkins, Dallas decided to go with Cooks.
With the receiver now in Frisco, what does that mean for Lamb?
In short, only good things.
Despite having a season that saw him have career-highs in receiving yards (1,359), receptions (107), yards per game (79.9), touchdowns (9), and catch percentage (68.6%), the Cowboys knew Lamb needed help as the offense often went through the former Oklahoma Sooner.
With Cooks arriving, Lamb could have more freedom to roam around the secondary.
As Cooks still possesses his blazing speed, crisp route running, and ability to get downfield quickly, opposing defenses will not be able to drift a safety over to Lamb's side of the field. Cooks' home run speed needs to be accounted for.
That means Lamb could see himself in single coverage. So why does that matter? Well, according to PFF, Lamb was the seventh-best receiver in the NFL against single coverage and had a rating of 91.9 last season.
"Of Lamb's 36 catches vs. single coverage, 31 went for a first down, and over half (19) went for 15-plus yards," PFF wrote.
So, when faced with single coverage, Lamb gets first downs and gets downfield. With Cooks now opposite him, Dallas' #88 could see himself in some relatively favorable matchups next season.
The Cowboys got the help Lamb needed, and while some fixate on what Cooks can do for Dak Prescott, what he could open up for Lamb could be just as important.
