Cowboys 'Trade and Move On' From Dak Prescott? Fake News on 'Sending Message' to QB

There is now a Dak Prescott-related "cottage industry'' of fake news following our report on the Cowboys' NFL Draft thoughts on QBs. "Trade him and move on''? Really?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys being intrigued by QB CJ Stroud in the upcoming NFL Draft? Our sourced story detailed the necessary machinations of it all, and the unlikelihood of the highly-ranked Ohio State QB landing in Dallas.

We stand by that story, just as we stand by our reporting on Dallas doing its homework on Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker.

What we cannot stand by, however, is the cottage industry that's sprung up, using this reports to falsely paint a picture of what it means for Dak Prescott.

Our initial report on Stroud caused great ire in Cowboys Nation, especially among those who are Dak supporters (and especially again if they didn't actually read the story) That report has also caused people like Fox Sports radio host Jason Smith to pretend to have insight into the origin of our story and its deeper meaning.

Smith, essentially creating the impression that he possesses some inside into the background of our reporting, writes, “The Cowboys have been linked with C.J. Stroud and Hendon Hooker. This is a HUGE message to Dak Prescott. Dallas will "Jordan Love” Dak and draft a QB this season.”

He added that the Cowboys will, should Prescott fail this year, "trade him and move on.''

We don't know "Jason Smith.'' We know that he is using our report as a springboard to justify his charade. We do also know that we cannot possibly mop up every errant rumor and false claim that springs from our reporting. But we can use this as a sample case for how Cowboys Nation might wish to consume this stuff.

The Cowboys are on-record as wanting to draft a QB, and they are also on-record as believing Prescott is the centerpiece to their Super Bowl wishes - and that they'd like him to spend "the next 10 years'' in that position. Do those two concepts conflict

Not at this time.

To pretend that Dallas' thoughts on Stroud have been "leaked'' (to CowboysSI.com) as part of some conspiratorial master plan to motivate, anger or oust Prescott is to pretend that Fox Sports Radio (or any other posers) have knowledge about the background involved and identity involved in our sourced information.

"Jason Smith'' and Fox Sports Radio have not been granted that access by us.

How can a media outlet properly absorb our report and "advance the ball''? FS1's Nick Wright does so here ...

We fully understand the importance of stories that lend insight into the Cowboys' thoughts on roster-building, and we are fully aware of when the information is sensitive or even incendiary. We will continue to make sure we recognize that sensitivity, but we will also continue our 33-year track record of reporting what we know about the Cowboys in what we believe is a responsible manner.

And then we'll cross our fingers that the information we present is re-reported with some similar level of responsibility here - something that isn't happening when media members are issuing outrageous, uninformed and bogus "trade him and move on!'' fibs.
