Cowboys Called on Trade for Veteran Kicker; 'Anybody on Earth' a Better Plan?

Dallas was on a trade call with the Jaguars, all involved knowing how kicker-needy the Cowboys are.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys' credo on the search for a new kicker have been stated in a colorful form, but to some still comes across as rather passive. But as it turns out, "America's Team'' did indeed take a phone call on the idea of a trade for a kicker ...

Before ... well ... passing on the opportunity to land an established leg.

That opportunity in a sense centered around the Denver Broncos cutting Brandon McManus - but no, Dallas wasn't in the market to sign him. Rather, he landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but not before the Jags made a call to Dallas, knowing how kicker-needy the Cowboys are.

“After signing McManus, the Jacksonville Jaguars reached out to the Cowboys about a potential trade for Riley Patterson, according to a source,'' writes ESPN.

So for a moment there, the Jags sort of had two kickers. ... but did not find a taker in the Cowboys, causing Jacksonville to move Patterson to Detroit. And what did Detroit pay in the trade? We're told it's a "conditional seventh-round pick,'' meaning in essence that Detroit paid nothing.

What was unappealing to the Cowboys about Patterson? Obviously not the trade cost. Was it his salary? Nope; he'll make $940,000. Was it his age? Nope; he's 23. Ability? Well, he was 30 of 35 last year on field goals and 36 of 37 on PATs, so he's fine there ...

Cowboys Nation is left hoping there is a superior plan right around the corner - and considering signing “anybody else on earth who is not on the team right now,'' as special-teams coordinator "Bones'' Fassel puts it, is clever ... but certainly doesn't reveal a particular focus.

Tristan Vizcaino is the lone kicker on the Cowboys roster as 2022 kicker Brett Maher, infamous for last year's postseason flops, remains a free agent. Fassel has openly pointed to Robbie Gould, Ryan Succop and Mason Crosby as some of the available veteran kickers who Dallas might chase  ...

“There’s really no secrets of who’s available,'' Fassel said. "I think the good thing for us at the kicker spot is just being patient and deciding who that second guy is we’re going to bring in.''

Fassel even mentioned that "it’s an ongoing process that we’ve got to make a decision on before Week 1.”

Again, that sounds a bit passive ... but now we know that at least Dallas believes it'll end up with a kicker who is superior to Riley Patterson.
