‘Dumb as F***!' Cowboys' Diggs Destroys LeSean McCoy, Defends Dak Prescott
The Dallas Cowboys would give a metaphorical arm and leg if a training camp civil war was their biggest concern.
Extracurriculars between teammates are a common site at the league's 32 summer bases, particularly in the early stages. before joint practices and/or preseason games. Still over a week away from their own exhibition opener on Aug. 12 against Jacksonville, Cowboys camp hosted what should've been a quickly forgotten heavyweight battle this week when cornerback Trevon Diggs and quarterback Dak Prescott, one where the former advised the franchise thrower to "shut your b**** a** up!"
Even if Diggs and Prescott weren't clearly playing up the not-so-pleasantries, the 24-hour world of hot takes, spurred on by Cowboy-based clicks and Prescott's in-the-spotlight status as the franchise quarterback for "America's Team,'' quickly pounced.
Dak and Diggs tried to explain, saying they are "brothers'' who enjoy the give-and-take. Prescott told CowboysSI.com's Bri Amaranthus that trash talk is his "favorite'' part of camp. Veteran CowboysSI.com reporter Mike Fisher reached back into the archives to establish how commonplace this is, using a clip of future Hall-of-Famer Charles Haley roasting future Hall of Famer Troy Aikman on their way to another Super Bowl.
But none of that stopped the pouncers, who are either ignorant or hypocritical ... a group led by former Cowboys enemy-turned-hot take artist LeSean McCoy, who served as a harbinger of potential Dallas doom during an edition of Fox Sports' debate program "Speak."
"I played with Michael Vick, played with Tom Brady, played with Josh Allen, played with Patrick Mahomes, nobody on the team, coaches, trainers, would even fix their lips to say something like that to the quarterback," McCoy said. "A franchise quarterback? Two things, that tells me: one is they don't respect him and two is that they're tired of everybody making him the face, the guy, and when we get in a tight game, he's the one that blows the game for us."
Diggs, forced to carry a verbal fire extinguisher in the aftermath of the NSFW exchange, caught wins of McCoy's comments and responded in turn on Friday, though he cleaned the language this time around.
"Sound dumb af.. saying anything," Diggs declared on X, formerly known as Twitter before the Cowboys engaged in their week-closing activities.
As a 12-year NFL veteran, last playing with Tampa Bay in 2020, McCoy should be well-versed in the art of the extracurricular. He himself was no stranger to summer sizzles, notably scuffling with close friend and then-Philadelphia Eagles teammate Trent Cole in 2014.
At the time, McCoy diffused the idea of in-fighting beyond the immediate aftermath by claiming that ... like Diggs and Prescott have declared ad nauseam ... it was good-natured ribbing between friends.
"The whole camp so far, they've just been touching just a little too much," McCoy said, per Phil Sheridan of ESPN at the time. "I'm trying to let them know 'it's OK, you can' t cover me.' We'll go in the locker room area and talk it out, joke it out. It's one thing when you don't know a guy and he's trying to win a job. (Cole's) actually one of my good friends."
Friendly banter? If that was Dallas' biggest issue, the Cowboys would be planning the championship parade tomorrow.
