Dallas Cowboys' Trey Lance: Future Starting Quarterback, Predicts San Francisco 49ers Star
SAN JOSE, Calif. - This isn't at all about "Sunday Night Football.'' Nor is it really about Dak Prescott, though it will surely be twisted that way. In fact, it might not even be about the Dallas Cowboys, who are visiting the San Francisco 49ers here in Week 5 in a game that will include a lot of talk about quarterback and former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance ...
But almost certain no action from Lance, who will be making his first return to San Francisco since he was traded to the Cowboys at the start of the season.
Someday, though? One of Lance's former 49ers teammates believes that he will not only be a starting quarterback in the NFL again, but that he will become very good at it.
From star tackle Trent Williams, via NBC: “I don’t have a crystal ball, but I think in this league when you do the right things and you’re made of the right stuff, eventually opportunity will find its way back to you.
"And I think that will happen in Trey’s case. And when it does, we’ll all see the talent everybody knows that’s inside of him.”
The Cowboys happen to think highly of Lance's character. Can he play? As the third-string QB, his only chance to do that in a game in 2023 will be in case of an emergency situation resulting from an injury to Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
The Cowboys spent a fourth-round pick to explore the question ... after the 49ers paid a huge price (including multiple first-round draft picks) to draft him, thinking they knew the answer.
'Nothing to Lose!' Cowboys Trade for Trey Lance; Details
Lance is not a threat to anybody above him on the Dallas depth chart. He works with the practice squad, and maybe that is a stepping stone that can lead to another opportunity someday, somewhere. But he is under contract to the Cowboys for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, and he can he retained by exercising a fifth-year option for the 2025 season.
So for right now? Trey Lance is just trying to be the best third-string quarterback he can be.
