Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers: Trey Lance, 'Secret Agent'? FISH PODCAST

The Dallas Cowboys are of course picking the brain of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance ahead of the two teams' matchup on Sunday. Fish Podcast

When it comes to facing a Super Bowl contender like the San Francisco 49ers, any potential advantage could in theory make a massive difference. But our Mike Fisher in his Fish Report Cowboys Podcast is stressing "could in theory.''

Get an advantage? That's the approach of the Dallas Cowboys, who travel to play the 49ers on Sunday night looking to avenge their last two playoff losses. This time around, the Cowboys have a player who used to be on the opposing sideline in quarterback Trey Lance. Lance naturally has some valuable information about his former team, and according to Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas plans to take full advantage of that knowledge.

"Trey knows a little bit about what they're doing," Schottenheimer told reporters on Monday. "The cool thing is, like I said, the [Cowboys] know them well, I know them well from being in Seattle, Trey knows them well. Like last week, it's kind of in good fun and humor. We all use pieces that we have in place, but we don't go too far into it."

Schottenheimer's comments are particularly interesting considering what he said just a week ago. Just before Dallas' matchup with the New England Patriots, Schottenheimer expressed concerns over former Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott and Will Grier sharing valuable information with the enemy. Schottenheimer's comments had a bit of a jokey undertone, and it hardly ended up mattering as Dallas crushed New England 38-3, but to see such a quick 180 is a little surprising.

Again, though, any advantage is one worth taking.

"We can know exactly what they're going to do, because they don't do too much, and they're still really, really tough to go against just because they're so talented. ... We'll definitely talk to Trey," Schottenheimer said. "He knows a lot of the pieces going against them in practice, but it doesn't always help, as we learned (Sunday).''

Lance has yet to see any action in a Cowboys jersey yet, as he remains the third quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. So his biggest chance to help might be as a "spy.'' Still, in the Fish Report Podcast (LISTEN HERE!), Mike Fisher points out that Schottenheimer and McCarthy and Shanahan and Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn are already as "inside'' as it gets.

"Quinn was the head coach in Atlanta when they went to the Super Bowl,'' Fish says, "And remember who his offensive coordinator was? DQ hired Shanahan! In terms of 'intel,' Quinn and Shanahan have it on each other from before Trey Lance was old enough to shave. This 'double-agent' business is greatly exaggerated.''
