Cowboys Trade For Trey Lance 'Makes Sense!' - Troy Aikman

The Dallas Cowboys have received varying opinions in evaluations of the Trey Lance trade, but Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman weighed in on why the deal "made sense."

The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Trey Lance and questions began to swirl. ... oh, and obvious answers, too.

Will he compete for Dak Prescott's job? No. Does this mean Prescott's job is in jeopardy? No. Will Dallas pony up the money to pay Prescott? Yes. Team owner Jerry Jones has reiterated his plan to keep Prescott for "a long time."

So while there were knee-jerk reactions to the Lance trade that signal turmoil in the Cowboys future, Hall of Fame quarterback for "America's Team" Troy Aikman provided a level-headed analysis of the trade which mirrored our Mike Fisher's "dart" assessment.

"I thought it made sense," Aikman said on ESPN insider Adam Schefter's podcast, "The Golden Age of Football," Tuesday. "To bring in a guy like Trey Lance, who was the third-overall pick for a fourth-round pick and just take a chance on him and say, 'Hey, who knows?'"

Aikman said he was unsure about how the trade was communicated to Prescott; it has been revealed that Jones didn't tell the Cowboys starting quarterback nor head coach Mike McCarthy. When Schefter brought up that Prescott was left in the dark - something we see as a non-issue - Aikman did note that's not how Jones used to operate when Troy was on the team.

"We never picked up a quarterback without at least me being notified," Aikman said. "I didn't sign off on it. I didn't have veto power, but I was notified before anything was done."

Aikman gave personnel boss Will McClay his flowers for his input into the roster construction over the past few seasons and, specifically, bringing in wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore via trades.

Aikman, who brought the Cowboys three Super Bowl victories in the 1990s, pondered if Lance's presence gives Dallas leverage in Prescott's contract negotiations.

"I don't know," Aikman said. "Trey has to prove that he can play, but I think for Dallas making that trade, I just thought, for such little risk, 'Why not?'"
