Cowboys 'Triplets' Dak Prescott, Tony Pollard, CeeDee Lamb: Top-Ranked Trio in NFL?
The term "triplets" in the NFL originated from the great Dallas Cowboys teams of the 1990s consisting of Hall-of-Farmers Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin.
Since that Super Bowl-winning roster, Dallas has seen great quarterback, running back and wide receivers trios. From Tony Romo, DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant, to the Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper combo - all of which have seen success. However, none have hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy since that 1995 team.
But could this year's group of Prescott, Tony Pollard and CeeDee Lamb break the Cowboys cold spell? CBS Sports recently ranked the Dallas "triplets" No. 6 in the NFL, just behind the Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills.
"The only players to match or exceed Lamb's first-three-year totals in receptions (260), receiving yards (3,396) and receiving touchdowns (20) are Justin Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr., A.J. Green and Michael Thomas," CBS Sports writes. "Meanwhile, the people hung up on Prescott's interception total from last season are willfully subjecting themselves to recency bias. Even after last year's disaster, Prescott has the fifth-lowest interception rate among 165 players with 2,000 or more pass attempts in their career. The dude is really good, full stop."
Entering his first season as a full-time starter, Pollard could be in the midst of another breakout campaign and possible rushing title. And after trading for receiver Brandin Cooks this offseason, Prescott and Lamb enter the year with more offensive flexibility than ever.
While living up to three Super Bowl victories in four years are immense expectations, this Cowboys roster has the potential to accomplish something it hasn't done in nearly three decades. … and if it happens, “The New Triplets” will have earned to moniker.
