Dallas Cowboys Implode, Lose 42-10 to San Francisco 49ers: Live Game Log

The Dallas Cowboys head west in Week 5 to take on an all too familiar foe in the San Francisco 49ers. … and speaking of “familiar” … they’ll get to say hello to old pal Randy Gregory.

The Dallas Cowboys head west in Week 5 to take on an all too familiar foe in the San Francisco 49ers. … and speaking of “familiar” … they’ll get to say hello to old pal Randy Gregory.

The two teams have formed an enmity that would rival any division foes for either organization, and it goes back nearly 50 years. … and now another layer to it as the Broncos, instead of cutting Cowboys ex Gregory, are moving him to the Niners for a swap of late 2024 picks.

How soon does he suit up? In time for “Sunday Night Football”? Stay tuned …

Meanwhile … Most recently, the competition has been one-sided, with San Francisco vanquishing Dallas in each of the last two postseasons. The Cowboys have dominated the last nine regular-season meetings with a record of 7-2 dating back to 2001. But the past two matchups have gone to the 49ers, and it just so happens those have been playoff contests.

While this game has less meaning than the previous two, it could impact the location of a possible third postseason meeting in as many seasons between the two teams. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy isn't letting recent history dictate this week.

“This is not all about what happened last year,” McCarthy said. “This is not walking down the street and get in a fight with a guy and then every time you turn the corner you’re looking for him. This is about winning the game. This is about winning the next game. But we know who we’re playing.”

Dallas has lost that "fight" the last two times. The Cowboys lost 19-12 at the Niners in the Divisional Round last season, following a 23-17 loss at home in the Wild Card Round the previous season. Dallas didn't play its best ball in either matchup, struggling on offense and making too many mistakes.

A win on Sunday won't make those losses go away, but it could serve as a benchmark of where the Cowboys matchup against the best in the NFC.

“You just use it as a game like this is where we were at last year, this is where we’re at now,” Cowboys star linebacker/edge rusher Micah Parsons said. "I’m all about now and how can we define ourselves now and how can we say this is who we are and get a statement win and come back here and show how good we really are?”
