Dalvin Demands: Cowboys Sign Cook? 26 Million New Reasons Why Not

NEW: Dalvin to Dallas would mean the Cowboys paying $26 million for one season of two running backs … thus providing us 26 million reasons for the Cowboys to pass on Cook.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys were never really in the market for two of the most heralded free agents in the NFL. The New England Patriots, however, are said to remain the favorite to sign both free agents DeAndre Hopkins and Dalvin Cook

We know the Pats made a contract offer to Hopkins, and now we know what it will take to sign Cook. … thus also reinforcing what CowboysSI.com has reported all spring regarding Dallas’ disinterest in Dalvin.

Is it because the former Vikings star might be in decline? Sure. But there is also this little matter of $16 million … and this other little matter of $10 million.

NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported on Monday's Good Morning Football that Cook believes he's “one of the best backs in the league, and he wants to be paid as such.”

Aha. Good for him. Problem: If a guy wants that, he pretty much wants what the San Francisco 49ers' Christian McCaffrey has. McCaffrey is scheduled to be the league's highest-paid running back this season at $16 million.

Apparently, the Miami Dolphins have made an offer to Cook, who was released last month by Minnesota. The Patriots are said to be "intrigued.” But we’re pretty sure they’re not $16 million worth of “intrigued.”

Our reporting on the Cowboys and Cook was based on the idea of him maybe wanting $10 million … and because Dallas already pays that to Tony Pollard, there was simply no cap logic in employing two $10 million backs.

But with this news? Dalvin to Dallas would mean the Cowboys paying $26 million for one season of two running backs … thus providing us 26 million reasons for the Cowboys to pass on Cook.
