Cowboys ‘3-Headed Monster’ Intact: DBs Celebrate Donovan Wilson Signing
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys were conspicuously quiet during the NFL's free-agent Monday. But on Tuesday morning, we found out they didn't just oversleep.
Dallas made a major move on Tuesday morning, re-signing impact safety Donovan Wilson to a three-year $24 million deal, including $13.5 million guaranteed, per reports.
In his four seasons with the Cowboys, Wilson had far exceeded the expectations of a sixth-round draft pick. He has emerged as one of the best and most important players on the defensive side of the ball.
After the 2019 NFL Draft, Wilson was expected to offer depth and time on special teams out of Texas A&M. But after replacing Darian Thompson in Week 4 of the 2020 season, he quickly became a favorite of the defensive staff.
He entered the 2022 season in the final year of his rookie contract and had a career-best season while leading the three-headed monster in the Cowboys' secondary with Jayron Kearse and Malik Hooker.
And yes, the fellas are pleased …
Wilson started all 17 games for Dallas last season, playing 84 percent of the team's defensive snaps. That shows durability. It also offers the biggest ability a player can have, according to team owner and general manager, Jerry Jones - availability.
He registered 101 tackles, nine quarterback hits and five sacks last year, also contributing an interception, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. In 51 games played for the Cowboys Wilson has three interceptions and 8.5 sacks.
With the defensive secondary almost set - Dallas still needs depth at cornerback - it can focus on the linebacker position, and hopefully negotiate a long-term deal with Leighton Vander Esch.
