Ezekiel Elliott Cut 'The Right Move,' Says Cowboys Legend DeMarcus Ware; 'It Happened to Me!'
ARLINGTON - Dallas Cowboys legend DeMarcus Ware says the team's release of standout running back Ezekiel Elliott was "the right move.''
And how does newly-minted Pro Football Hall-of-Famer come to that conclusion?
Because, D-Ware reminds, "it happened to me!''
Indeed, Ware went from being a wildly successful first-round pick of the Cowboys to being cut after nine seasons in 2014, amid a great deal of emotion, largely due to the believe that he was fading as a player and could no longer fit well under the salary cap.
And yes, Zeke just experienced the same thing after seven seasons.
"It happened to me to where it got to a point where I was still playing well - I still had something in the tank,'' said Ware, who stated that Elliott also can be an effective NFL running back. "But you got to also think about the whole team in general. And so they made the right decision.''
Ware, speaking to us on Friday at a charity event in Arlington promoting the Invited Celebrity Golf Classic, went on to join the Denver Broncos and won a Super Bowl, and he forecasts Elliott will find success with his next team. And then maybe after that, Elliott will "come home'' to DFW, as Ware has in retirement.
“It’s hard because when you play for a team as big as Dallas, that is 'America’s Team,''' said Ware, who is headed to the Hall of Fame on August 5 in Canton. “I got to play nine years in Dallas. I gave everything to Dallas. ... Then I got to come back home.''
