Ezekiel Elliott 'Has Other Options,' Cowboys Signing 'Unlikely' - Report
The Ezekiel Elliott reunion with the Dallas Cowboys idea simply will not go away, though the "Rumor Roller-Coaster'' just took a downward turn.
After a season that saw Elliott post career-lows in rushing attempts (231), yards (876), yards per attempt (3.8), and yards per game (58.4), coupled with the emergence of Tony Pollard and his pricy contract, Elliott was cut. Even still, owner Jerry Jones stated right after the NFL Draft that he refused to rule out a return.
Said Jones: "The ship hasn’t sailed there. We haven’t made a decision at all. As far as our interest in Zeke, nothing we did today changes that. I haven’t ruled out Zeke.”
Meanwhile, Hall of Famer Troy Aikman added fuel to the fire of a potential return to Frisco for Zeke, stating that a reunion with Elliott might be on the cards.
“I don’t want to speak for the Cowboys or the Joneses, but it feels like (a reunion) might be the case,” Aikman said (via our Mike Fisher of CowboysSI.com). “I know there’s a great amount of respect for Zeke. ... I’ve talked to a number of people that have been in that locker room - coaches, players - and he’s the glue.''
But now comes new information that might put an end to the roller-coaster. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram wrote on Tuesday, "Per a league source, Elliott has a couple of options he's planning to pursue post-draft, and a return to the Cowboys is unlikely.''
Of course, we've heard this all before. And we've also heard of the odds of who that next team might be. Per OddsChecker, the Chargers are the most likely Elliott landing spot, which makes some sense because new Chargers coordinator Kellen Moore was Elliott's coach from 2019 to 2022 in Dallas.
For Dallas, Pollard is the go-to guy, with the Pro Bowler being backed up for now by Ronald Jones, Malik Davis and rookie draft pick Deuce Vaughn.
The emotional tug that Dallas must feel with Elliott still out in the cold is undoubtedly strong, but it now seems like it is Zeke who feels the time has come to go their separate ways.
