'Secrets!' How 'Helpful' is Trey Lance for Dak Prescott's Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers?

Trey Lance was acquired via trade by the Dallas Cowboys from the San Francisco 49ers prior to the season. And now Dak Prescott is citing how "helpful'' the third-string QB has been in preparation for a Week 5 showdown.

In what was viewed by many as somewhat of a head-scratching trade acquisition by the Dallas Cowboys to acquire San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, there may now be an unexpected positive.

“He has been very helpful, honestly,'' said Dak Prescott of how Lance has aided Dallas in practice this week. "Just in the way that their defense can move, certain calls they may have to make when we put them in certain positions. Things you kind of see on film but get some definitive answers from him in the way they did things. He’s been very helpful.”

The Cowboys only had to give up a fourth-round pick to acquire the former No. 3 overall pick, and there was a somewhat secretive manner in which they did so, with owner Jerry Jones saying that coach Mike McCarthy (not to mention Dak) was not included in the acquisition talks.

"No, we, we didn't tell anybody until we did it, period," said Jerry.

Does that mean that the trade was a "secret'' that would lead to Lance revealing "secrets''?

Nah. But it is an added bonus. Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has made it known that he is quizzing Lance in order to help prepare for the undefeated 49ers.

While one could think that someone who struggled to win the job in San Francisco wouldn't have the best idea of what they are doing, Lance did spend plenty of time learning the system from 2021-23. Either way, the Dallas defense likely will appreciate all the help it can get when it comes to slowing down the San Francisco offense that ranks No. 2 in the league in total offense.

They have a rising star in his replacement in Brock Purdy, and also happen to have one of the best running backs in the sport in Christian McCaffrey. This is by far the toughest test for the Cowboys, and based on ESPN's Matchup Predictor, San Francisco is viewed as a pretty significant favorite. ... with the oddsmakers having Dallas as a 3.5-point underdog ... and with "interrogating'' Trey Lance, however innocuous that action might really be, as part of the process.
