Inside Info: How Jerry Jones Grandson Helped Cowboys Draft LB DeMarvion Overshown
When the Dallas Cowboys drafted Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown in the third round of the NFL Draft, they knew him slightly better than the other 31 teams.
A Texas native who grew up idolizing the Cowboys? Check.
A superb athlete who has a rare combination of speed, physicality and intellect? Check and check.
But the connection between Overshown and Dallas goes deeper than him putting "I am going to play in the NFL one day for the Dallas Cowboys," on a third-grade project.
Overshown, a two-time Butkus Award semifinalist, was teammates with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' grandson Paxton Anderson during his time with the Longhorns.
“Paxton is a good person,” Overshown said. “I don’t know what exactly he said to his grandpa about me, but a couple of times Mr. Jones said it was an A+ from what he got from Paxton. So whatever he said, it was good, I love him for it, and I’m very appreciative.”
Anderson, whose mother is Dallas exec Charlotte Jones, began his Texas career as a walk-on receiver in 2020 and now enters his fourth season.
Jones went on to add that his grandson and Overshown were even lockermates during their shared time with the Longhorns.
And Anderson's praise during the pre-draft process aided Dallas in selecting Overshown with the No. 90 pick on Friday.
“[Anderson] had mentioned it from time to time in the past,” Jones said. “The way he said it was, ‘Whether [Overshown] is practicing or playing, he’s just all over the place. He’s everywhere.”
Overshown will add instant linebacker depth and likely be a special-teams piece in his rookie campaign. Jones family ties won’t help him make the team. But they did play a role in his selection, maybe a boost for both him and the Cowboys.
