Cowboys' Mike McCarthy Favorite To Be First Fired Coach

At this point, we will just sigh and give you - while neither attacking nor defending Mike McCarthy or Jerry Jones or the Dallas Cowboys - the raw odds on the first NFL coach to be fired.

We're not going to argue anymore about the positive relationship that we know the Jones family has with Mike McCarthy, or the history of patience Jerry Jones has before he fires head coaches.

At this point, we will just sigh and give you - while neither attacking nor defending McCarthy or Jones or the Dallas Cowboys - the raw odds.

Yes, the 2023 season has yet to get started, but the oddsmakers never rest. Because of course the gamblers never rest. And so that means there are odds already out on which NFL coach will be first to the unemployment like next offseason. Per BetUS Pro Football, the five head coaches most likely be fired are:

  1. Mike McCarthy (+500)
  2. Todd Bowles (+600)
  3. Ron Rivera (+700)
  4. Dennis Allen (+800)
  5. Kevin Stefanski (+900)

McCarthy is perched at the top of this list despite having posted back-to-back 12-win seasons over the past two years. And of course, the Cowboys are a "go-to'' when it comes to "hot seat'' talk, despite that slow Jerry trigger finger that we promised to not mention.

Todd Bowles in a post-Tom Brady Tampa? That could be a bad team. Ron Rivera in Washington? That could be a team that finishes in the basement of the tough NFC East, with new ownership maybe wishing to create its own mark. Dennis Allen and the Saints? The NFC South is wide-open. Stefanski and the Browns? Expectations are high ... and yet there might be three teams in that division better than them.

For what it's worth, McCarthy has grown comfortable with the "uniqueness'' of working for "America's Team.'' And the Jones family has full confidence in him. But the oddsmakers must do their thing, and so must the gamblers. And that's all we will say about that.
