Jerry Jones Rates His Dallas Cowboys at The Bye: 'Sloppy' But 'Proud'
FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is a man of many words. But his description of his team's 20-18 win at the Los Angeles Chargers on "Monday Night Football'' can essentially be boiled down to two of them.
"Sloppy'' ... and "proud.''
On the one hand, the Cowboys moved to 4-2 on the season with the win as they enter their NFL bye week. And they did so against what most observers would consider a solid foe in the home-standing Chargers.
Said Jerry: “I’m really proud that we got out there and had that kind of win against them.''
At the same time - and maybe there is a positive to be taken from a team that wins in the clutch even as it is not performing at its best - "pride'' was joined by ...
“I felt it was as disjointed or sloppy a game as (can be) ... Jones said on Tuesday’s 105.3 The Fan. “I really thought the game was, relatively speaking statistically, was even. ... Penalties evened out.''
The penalty point, by the numbers, is correct, as the Cowboys and Chargers combining for 20 earned flags on the night in the nationally televised game from SoFi Stadium. But that is a greater concern in Dallas given that it was flagged 11 times, once again boosting the Cowboys' not-proud-of average on the season to 7.7 penalties per game - which puts them at No. 2 in the league.
Dallas coach Mike McCarthy, by the way, agreed with that assessment.

“Not to be 'Negative Nelly' after a win, but the pre-snap penalties, it's a reoccurring issue on the road,'' McCarthy said. "The four road games, they've all been a problem. So we have to get better there. Have to resolve that because that's holding us back.”
