Cowboys Urged to Sign Kareem Hunt; Why Ex GM is Wrong

Former NFL GM Rick Spielman suggests the Dallas Cowboys and Kareem Hunt would be a good pairing.

The Dallas Cowboys are - in the minds of some - in the market to replace former running back Ezekiel Elliott. That replacement won't come in the form of Dalvin Cook, as CowboysSI.com has been reporting for months ... especially not now that he apparently wants to be paid like the No. 1 back in football.

An Elliott return isn't in Dallas' plans, as we've also reported often. So, former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman suggests that Kareem Hunt could fill the secondary running back void for the Cowboys.

The open role? Tony Pollard will deservedly be the starting running back. His electric play continues to open things up for the Cowboys' offense, and Hunt -- or whichever backup running back the Cowboys choose to employ -- will be able to play complementary football with less pressure.

Hunt had an incredible start to his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, logging 1,327 rushing yards in his rookie season and finding the end zone eight times on the ground. He added three receiving touchdowns and 455 receiving yards that season, too.

Injuries started to pile up and Hunt didn't play a full season again until his second season with the Cleveland Browns and his fourth season as a pro. However, he only started in five games, as he was sharing the position with Nick Chubb.

However, where things stand now, injuries could be less of a concern. Hunt could play a limited number of snaps will providing powerful running and receiving out of the backfield.

The soon-to-be 28-year-old running back plays a similar style to Elliott in the sense of running through contact. This would make him a quality backup to Pollard, in the ex-GM's mind. But what he and other critics are missing, besides the concern that Hunt is almost "out of gas''? Dallas already employs five backup running backs, all of whom are going to get a chance in Oxnard at training camp to prove their worth. What are the odds that Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle, Ronald Jones, Deuce Vaughn and Hunter Luepke all fall short of being able to do the job? Pretty low ... meaning the odds of signing somebody like Hunt seem pretty low, too.
