Cowboys 'New RB' Answer: Already On Roster in Malik Davis?
The Dallas Cowboys' offseason work is about to get underway, with the futures of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard among the most glaring issues that need to be addressed.
With Elliott still on his huge contract (a cut and/or pay cut is likely incoming) and with Pollard entering free agency with the looming possibility of a franchise tag coming his way, some have Dallas taking Texas Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson in the first round of the draft.
His 1,580 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns led the Big 12 Conference, so it makes sense that Robinson is being sounded out as Dallas' future at the running back position.
But...
Could the easiest answer already be right under their noses in Malik Davis?
Undrafted out of Florida, Davis spent 2022 as the third-stringer behind Pollard and Zeke.
Davis played 12 games, totaling 161 rushing yards and a touchdown on 38 carries. He also averaged 4.2 yards a clip (Elliott averaged 3.8).
Against the Tennessee Titans, he totaled 39 yards from 10 carries (3.9 yards per carry). At Lambaeu, he carried the ball five times for 38 yards (7.6 yards per carry), and against the Indianapolis Colts, his three carries for 29 yards meant he averaged 9.7 yards per carry.
Zeke at $16 million? Not happening? Pollard at $10 million? That's being considered.
Davis at $800,000 in 2023, the second and final year of his deal? While Dallas is laboring to find a solution to its running back problems, the answer could be sitting right in front of them. It's not a sexy "splash'' idea, but it is a practical one, and that might be what the Cowboys need.
