Cowboys NFL Draft Hint: Michael Mayer Among 'Heavy' TEs Dallas Targeting

The Dallas Cowboys tight end position is now headed by young duo Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot, but Cowboys COO Stephen Jones isn't ruling out adding another to the room via the draft.

The Dallas Cowboys addressed several needs via free agency and enter the NFL draft not having a glaring hole on their roster. But tight end remains a position of focus for many.

Cowboys COO Stephen Jones feels like the front office is in a position to draft the "best player available" due to its free agency dealings.

“Absolutely. … We just feel like we’re in that situation," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.

And that could mean taking a tight end early in the draft despite having Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson on the roster.

“We feel like we’re going to be able to take care of situations, that will ultimately get done throughout the draft. Obviously, you lose a Dalton Schultz, you know, we drafted Ferguson last year and ended up with a great value in (undrafted) Hendershot.

"We feel good about that position. But ... the draft’s heavy there through quite a few players in those top three or four rounds that we think can be like a Ferguson or a Hendershot and come in and really help us.”

The one name consistently linked with Dallas is Notre Dame standout Michael Mayer, who had 809 receiving yards and seven touchdowns for the Fighting Irish last season.

With Hendershot and Ferguson showing signs that they could be ready to take the position for themselves, adding a player like Mayer, who is a contested catching beast, along with his ability to be a viable blocking option in the run game, as Dane Brugler said the Cowboys "can't pass" on Mayer, such is his quality.

So, while Jones hinted that Dallas could take a tight end, there is another player in running back Bijan Robinson, who has been constantly linked with the Cowboys at pick No.26.

It is doubtful that Robinson will "drop" to pick 26, but Jones said, "You never know" when asked about drafting the Texas Longhorns standout.

But which way will Dallas go in the first round? Reading the tea leaves, a tight end is obviously under consideration.
