'Mom Loves the Cowboys!' Free Agent Rashaan Evans Hopes To Help Dallas on 'MNF'
FRISCO - The injury absence of Leighton Vander Esch for at least a month creates a Dallas Cowboys problem. On Thursday, free agent Rashaan Evans, a former first-round pick, arrived here at The Star with a plan to solve that problem.
"(Bleep), I could play this week if I wanted to," said Evans on following his first practice with the team. ""It means a lot for the Cowboys to see something in me and bring me onboard," he said. "It's an exciting moment for me. … I've been training all season to be a part of somebody's team. And now that I have an opportunity to be a part of the Cowboys, I'm ready whenever they're ready."
Coach Mike McCarthy and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will need to see a bit more of the new No. 57 Evans in practices this week before they hand him that jersey in Los Angeles against the Chargers on "Monday Night Football.'' But desperate times call for desperate measures.
So it's off "the couch,'' as Evans himself termed in, and now about "enjoying the process of getting back to work and doing the little things to prepare for a game."
Evans, 27, helped Alabama win two national titles. He produced with his first team, the Titans, and he was a 17-game starter last year in Atlanta. His family is apparently as excited about this chance as he is. ...
"It's funny to have an opportunity to play for the Cowboys,'' he said, "because my mom loves (Dallas), my family loves (Dallas) and they're very excited for me to be a part of this organization."
Cowboys Officially Moving Vander Esch, Signing New LB
Evans' presence might mean that Micah Parsons gets to continue to get his snaps as an edge rusher rather than switch to linebacker ... again, hopefully sooner rather than later. But when Evans' time does come, on Monday or beyond, what can Cowboys Nation expect?
"Physicality," Evans said. "I try not to be too (vocal) in my words about my play, and I try to leave it up to what I've shown on TV, but I can't wait for that opportunity to come."
