'It's Not Lovey-Dovey!' Cowboys Jerry Jones on Relationship with Commanders Owner Dan Snyder
PHOENIX - Jerry Jones has long been a mentor, advocate and friend when it comes to all things Daniel Snyder. But the Washington Commanders owner is embattled in every way, maybe on the verge of selling the team and maybe on the verge of being pushed out of the NFL.
So things change.
"It's a little more formal,'' Dallas Cowboys owner Jones told CowboysSI.com on Monday here at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix when we asked about his personal relationship with Snyder. "It's not lovey-dovey.''
Jones added that it's not "really strained in any way,'' either. But surely Jones' time being fully a supporter of Snyder's ownership has evaporated, in part because of the legal and behavioral entanglements that in part have Snyder on the precipice of departing the league.
Also on that list, Jones seemed to hint: A relative failure of the Commanders franchise to take advantage of all that Washington, D.C. and its fan base have to offer.
Jones cited the Commanders as "a national treasure,'' and the suggestion is - in part because Snyder has not been able to get cooperation on a new stadium - that the franchise has stumbled in reaping the benefits of that.
Three billionaire groups, including D.C. native Josh Harris (with Magic Johnson) and Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, have expressed interest in buying the team.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters here at the Biltmore hotel, "I believe that something is close to happening.'' But Jones added that there would be no resolution of the "not lovey-dovey'' problems while the owners are here in Phoenix.
