Eagles Jalen Hurts 'Mahomes-Type Deal' More Than Cowboys Dak Prescott?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott signed a four-year $160 million deal ahead of the 2021 season, putting him under contract through 2024.

There was no denying who the best quarterback in the NFC East was in 2022.

And depending on who you ask, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts could have even been considered the best signal caller in the league last season.

Finishing second in the league in MVP voting, Hurts led the Eagles to a 14-1 mark in his 15 appearances, tossing 22 touchdowns and 3,701 yards while adding another 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.

But the biggest difference between the man who just beat out Hurts in Super Bowl LVII and regular season MVP voting, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has nothing to do with their play on the field.

Instead, the contrast between the two begins with how much cap hit they brought to their teams.

Hurts, who just wrapped up his third career season and is still on his rookie scale contract, had a cap number of a mere $1.6 million last season.

Mahomes on the other hand, who restructured his contract with Kansas City in the 2020 offseason to a jaw-dropping 10-year $450 million deal, racked in $35 million.

So how does this impact the Dallas Cowboys and their quarterback Dak Prescott?

With Hurts becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2024, The Athletic's Mike Sando wrote that an anonymous NFL exec believes the Eagles quarterback new contract will be "a Mahomes-type deal with good structure for the team."

Spotrac calculates the market value for Hurts at $44.2 million following this season, with Bleacher Report predicting his next deal to be seven years and $345 million - an average of $49 million per year.

With that deal, Hurts would bring in more than Prescott's four-year $160 million deal, which he restructured in March, by roughly $9 million per year.

Barring a contract extension, Prescott, who turns 30 in July, will also be a free agent in 2024.

And after a down year where he tied the league-lead with 15 interceptions, the next two seasons for Prescott are certainly "prove-it" years with major financial implications on the line.

In a sense, a new Cowboys QB deal and a new Eagles QB deal are in a race against one another …sooner figures to be loser.

So its “Dak vs. Hurts” in yet another way.
