'More Physical!' Dallas Cowboys Signing LB Devin White Projected; Jerry Jones Plan?

LAS VEGAS - Jerry Jones vows that his team will be "all in,'' cap-wise, in 2024.

The Dallas Cowboys owner has also pinpointed "run-stopping'' being "more physical'' as a goal in building next season's roster.

And CBS Sports writes, “Dallas is never shy about adding big names.”

Well, two out of three ain't bad.

White, Devin

If we work on the assumption that Jones is true to his word on his first two statements, the idea of the Cowboys trying to add Buccaneers linebacker Devin White as a free agent this offseason makes sense. He has on his resume team credits (he’s won a Super Bowl) and individual credits (he's been a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro).

But the foundation of CBS assertion of Dallas' front-office style - which again, could change and go retro featuring "Wildcattin' Jerry'' - is flat wrong. And that colors our thinking every time we see a Cowboys-related projection like this.

There are pieces of this idea that make sense. White is just 25, was a high first-round pick, plays the run as an off-ball linebacker, is bulky enough at about 240, and may not break the bank ...

Though Spotrac projects White to earn $10.7 million annually over a two-year deal worth $21.5 million total. And we bet that's too much "bank'' for Dallas.

Additionally, Pro Football Focus, for what it's worth, is not particularly a fan of White.

Does Jerry's 'All-In' Reveal Really Mean Cowboys 'Influential' Free Agency Signings?

Dallas played light at linebacker last year, especially after the season-ending Leighton Vander Esch injury. It's not yet known if he will return. Nor do we know the specifics of Dallas' overall defensive plan in the wake of coordinator Dan Quinn's move to become Washington's head coach.

We know Dallas wants to bulk up and we know Dallas wants to stop the run. But "adding big names'' is a Jones habit that expired more than a decade ago ... and is a bad reason to think Devin White is about to be signed by the Cowboys.
