'Resilient!' Dak Prescott's Dallas Cowboys Hang On To Beat Los Angeles Chargers 20-17 In 'Monday Night' Thriller
After last week's shellacking against the San Francisco 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys desperately needed to bounce back on Monday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.
It took everything they had, but the Cowboys were able to get the bounce back they needed, besting the Chargers 20-17 to escape L.A. with a win. ... and how to describe it?
"Resilient!'' said QB Dak Prescott live on "Monday Night Football'' immediately after the final gun, using one of coach Mike McCarthy's favorite buzz words.
Just before the two-minute warning, Brandon Aubrey kicked a 39-yard field goal to put Dallas back up by three. However, the Cowboys' job was still far from done. With the Chargers' talented offense getting the ball back for a two-minute drill, the Cowboys' defense had to come up big in the biggest moment, and that it did.
On the first play after the two-minute warning, Micah Parsons came flying in for a crucial sack on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, notching the Cowboys' first and only sack of the night. Then on the very next play, the pass rush affected Herbert once again, leading to a game-sealing interception by Dallas cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Before all that, a key mistake almost proved disastrous for the Cowboys. A bizarre sequence on a Chargers punt led to L.A. getting the ball back in Dallas' red zone. Four plays later, the Chargers scored the tying touchdown on a one-yard pass from Herbert to tight end Gerald Everett.
In the end, though, Herbert and the Chargers couldn't complete the comeback.
Fresh off one of the worst performances of his career, Cowboys quarterback Prescott bounced back in a big way. The oft-criticized quarterback kept it clean and efficient, completing 21 of 30 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown, plus 40 yards and another touchdown on the ground. CeeDee Lamb had a team-high 117 yards on seven receptions, while Brandin Cooks scored his first touchdown in a Cowboys uniform.
Cowboys running back Tony Pollard didn't have his best game rushing with just 30 yards on 15 carries, but more than made up for it as a receiver. He caught six passes for 80 yards, including a 60-yard catch-and-run to set up Cooks' go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.
For L.A., Herbert completed 22 of 37 passes for 227 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The Chargers' run game was borderline non-existent, totaling just 53 yards on 23 carries.
The Cowboys now ride into their bye week on a high note before returning to host the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 29.
