Staubach's Take On Dak And His Cowboys Contract

Dallas has a tradition. No, it's not just about pursing excellence at the position of QB. Also important, it's about the supporting of one's heir.

FRISCO - There is a long-standing tradition in Cowboys Nation when it comes to quarterback, starting with Roger Staubach.

No, it's not just about pursing excellence at the position. Also important, it's about the supporting of one's heir.

So Staubach's unbending support of Dak Prescott - justified as it may be - is also simply the way Roger and company do this.

“They believe that Dak Prescott is their quarterback, and I do, too,” Staubach said on Doug Flutie’s SiriusXM podcast, reflecting on Dak's new four-year, $160 million deal. “I would love to see him stay healthy and have a great year next year.''

That, of course, is the Cowboys' plan. There is no particular health issue with Dak. (See above). Contrary to what Jimmy Johnson seems to think, there is no particular cap issue, either. (See below.)

No, the story, for now, is about tradition. There has been a tradition of excellence at the position for decades, from Don Meredith to Craig Morton to Roger Staubach to Danny White to Troy Aikman to Tony Romo - with, of course, some gaps in between.

And really, given that Super Bowls are the goal, Meredith, White and Romo aren't quite in the same club as the others. But Roger offered unbending support to Aikman when he got here. Roger and Aikman were then supporters of Romo. And now they are, led by Staubach, supporters of Dak.

Aikman will tell you, "I love Dak,'' and recently told us, "Dallas will sleep well'' after signing him.''

And Roger?

"I’m still a Cowboy fan,'' the legendary Staubach said. "I spent 11 years with the Cowboys, and I still root for the Cowboys. My wife and I and our kids go to the games, and we have a box out there, so I’m pulling for Dak. I really like him. I think he’s a fine football player, too.''
