Stephon Gilmore on New Cowboys Defense: ‘They Gotta Throw It Somewhere!’
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys’ big move at the start of the NFL business is big indeed … in the way new cornerback Stephon Gilmore intends on helping “America’s Team.”
“I’ve been a Dallas fan my whole life,” Gilmore told the DFW media on Thursday. “Once I heard the news I was so excited.”
The deals for Leighton Vander Esch and Donovan Wilson matter, of course. But they are returning to a good defense, in a sense keeping the ship steady.
This, though. Is a coordinator Dan Quinn defensive needle-movers … because it figures to make Dallas better.
The Colts gave sent the five-time Pro Bowl corner Gilmore to the Cowboys for a bag of beans - a 2023 fifth-round pick.
Gilmore is 32, and his NFL Defensive Player of the Year level of play in his Patriots days is likely faded a bit. But in tandem with another great playmaker at the other corner?
Said Gilmore on teaming with Trevon Diggs: “They got to throw it somewhere. One of us is going to be making plays.”
Fans might want the "splash" signing of a DeAndre Hopkins or an Odell Beckham Jr., and the Cowboys do not disagree.
But this is a defensive splash - and maybe a high-level “Doomsday” one.
“It’s going to be fun,” Gilmore said.
